Helping nervous patients at Beacon Park Dental

We know that for some people, making a dental appointment takes real courage. Whether you've had a difficult experience in the past, or you find the sounds and sensations of dental treatment overwhelming, we’ll find a way to work together.

There's no judgement here, and no pressure to do more than you're comfortable with on any given visit. Some patients need a first appointment that's just a conversation, and that's absolutely fine with us.

What is dental phobia?

Dental phobia is an intense fear of visiting the dentist that goes beyond ordinary nervousness. For some people it's a specific trigger, like the environment or sounds, and for others it's a more general dread that makes it difficult to book an appointment at all, let alone attend one.

Dental anxiety exists on a spectrum. You don't need to have a diagnosed phobia to find dental visits difficult, and you don't need to explain or justify how you feel. What matters is that you get the care you need, at a pace that feels manageable.

Does treating nervous patients cost more?

There's no additional charge for taking extra time with nervous patients. We factor dental anxiety into how we schedule appointments, so you won't feel rushed and there's no pressure to move faster than you're comfortable with.

If you need treatment, we'll give you a clear, itemised quote before we begin and talk you through every step before we start. Up-to-date prices for all our treatments are on our pricing page.

What does a visit look like for a nervous patient?

Getting in touch

Let us know you're nervous when you call or book online. Nicky, our receptionist, is experienced in putting anxious patients at ease right from that first conversation. We'll make sure we have enough time set aside for your appointment so you don’t feel rushed.

Your first visit

You're welcome to come in for a conversation before having an examination or receiving treatment. We can show you around the practice, explain what different procedures involve, and answer your questions. If you'd prefer to stay in the waiting area for a while, that's fine too.

During your appointment

You stay in control throughout your visit. We'll explain what we're doing before we do it, check in with you regularly, and stop whenever you need a break. Many nervous patients find that after one or two visits, their anxiety reduces significantly — but we won't rush that process.

Is dental anxiety stopping you from getting treatment?

Avoiding the dentist is understandable when visits feel overwhelming, but the longer a problem goes untreated, the more complex it tends to become. If you're scared of the dentist but you know you need treatment, the best first step is simply getting in touch.

As a private dental practice, we allow more time for each appointment, so you'll never feel rushed. Our clinic is quiet and relaxed, which helps take away some of the pressure often felt in busy NHS clinics.

A private dentist that understands dental fear

We've been seeing nervous patients at our Beacon Street practice since 2008, and dental anxiety is something our whole team takes seriously. We’re a fully private practice, so we can provide a completely different experience if you’re used to NHS practices. We can take as much time as you need, which can make a real difference for nervous patients.

Charlotte Sproston, our dental hygienist, is particularly experienced in working with anxious patients and takes a gentle, reassuring approach to hygiene care. If a hygiene appointment feels like a more approachable starting point than a full dental examination, that's a perfectly reasonable place to begin.
