A deeper, gentler clean with airflow tooth polishing

Airflow tooth polishing

Guided biofilm therapy (GBT) is a gentler, more thorough alternative to a traditional scale and polish. It quickly removes stains, plaque, and biofilm from difficult-to-reach areas.

Airflow tooth polishing at Beacon Park Dental

Our hygienists offer airflow tooth polishing as an alternative to a traditional scale and polish for patients who want a more comfortable, thorough clean. Using a combination of warm water, air, and fine powder, it removes staining and bacterial biofilm from the surfaces of your teeth and along the gumline.

Many patients notice a visible difference in cleanliness and brightness after their first airflow appointment, and find it considerably more comfortable than a conventional clean.

What is Guided Biofilm Therapy?

Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) is a structured approach to professional teeth cleaning that uses airflow technology at its core. The process begins by making biofilm visible with a disclosing dye, so your hygienist can see exactly where bacteria have built up before starting the clean. They then use the airflow handpiece to remove the biofilm systematically, followed by any remaining tartar using ultrasonic scaling where needed.

Because the airflow handpiece works gently, it’s better suited to patients with sensitive teeth or gums.

What is the guided biofilm therapy process?

Disclosing and assessment

Your hygienist applies a disclosing dye to your teeth that makes biofilm visible, so they can assess exactly where bacteria have built up before beginning the clean.

Airflow cleaning

Using a handpiece that directs a controlled stream of warm water, air, and fine powder, your hygienist removes biofilm, soft deposits, and surface staining from your teeth, along the gumline, and in the spaces between teeth.

Scaling and finishing

Your hygienist removes any remaining hardened tartar using gentle ultrasonic scaling. They'll then talk you through your home routine and any areas worth paying closer attention to between appointments.
